An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf
By MICHAEL HOLLINGER Directed by WHIT MacLAUGHLIN On the Arcadia Stage October 11 - December 9, 2007
It's 1961 and Victor is a wealthy American expatriate living in Paris. He owns the fabulous Café du Grand Boeuf – the world's greatest restaurant reserved solely for his private use. He arrives one summer evening after a trip to Madrid in a very bleak mood. As his fastidiously French staff fusses over him, he announces his decision to starve himself to death! Don’t miss our brand new production of Michael Hollinger's first full-length play at the Arden. This dark comedy celebrates the joys of cooking, sex, bullfighting and the works of Ernest Hemingway in a remarkably poignant, bittersweet tale of the absurdities and contradictions inherent in being human. Our ongoing collaboration with Philadelphia playwright Michael Hollinger has yielded six world premieres: Opus (which recently ended its run at Primary Stages in NYC), Tooth and Claw, Red Herring, Tiny Island, Incorruptible, and Empty Plate.
Critical Acclaim–
"Arden Theatre has become, in its 20th season, a landmark of theatrical creativity... a wickedly antic comedy... a 90-minute intellectual knockout... it is brilliantly created and impressively performed. As much fun as anyone might expect from live theatre." –KYW Newsradio [Review] "A humorous dish of witty wordplay... a veritable feast... delves into issues shared by everyone... a performance that is sure to satiate." –The Evening Bulletin [Review] "The play's premise is an intriguing one... An Empty Plate exhibits many of Hollinger's strengths as a playwright: witty dialogue, taut ensemble writing and the ability to dance on the knife-edge between comedy and drama." –Robert Zaller, Broad Street Review "Ian Merrill Peakes [Claude] is superb... a gutsy script that meshes light comedy of manners, farce and drama while celebrating Ernest Hemingway, bullfighting and gourmet cooking... a feast!" –Steve Cohen, Broad Street Review "Funny... charming... there are a lot of life lessons to be learned here. Douglas Rees [Victor] is superb." –Talkin' Broadway "The Arden's production is damn near perfect! The cast all have moments of sheer onstage brilliance as their colorful, often humorous, characters come to life." –Phillyist |
