A Moon for the Misbegotten
By EUGENE O'NEILL
Directed by MATT PFEIFFER On the Arcadia Stage January 6 - February 27, 2011
Two lost souls catch a glimpse of happiness in the moonlight. The newly lit fire within them seems strong enough to withstand a lifetime of disappointment and regret, but will it still be flickering when the cold dawn breaks? One of America’s master storytellers at the height of his powers, O’Neill creates a mythic tale of old sins and the redemptive power of love. This companion piece to Long Day's Journey into Night was O'Neill's final play. Critical Acclaim– "Grace Gonglewski is by all accounts one of Philadelphia's top actors, and in A Moon for the Misbegotten you can see how she got that reputation...She comes on like a typhoon...Ms. Gonglewski is a find. I long to see her again. Arden's production takes place on a plain, naturalistic set in a black-box theater, and therein lies much of the secret of why it works so well. Whatever the reason for its success, the Arden Theatre, which impressed me last year with another better-than-Broadway revival, that one of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George, has done it again." - Wall Street Journal [Review] "Gonglewski has a core strength that anchors a production.. her comfort with the role is evident in the way she guides her cast mates through the script, much as Josie provides a safe haven for Phil, Jim, and the rest of the town's men." - The Philadelphia Inquirer "Another fine performance from an actress who has been a key figure in Philly’s theater revival, and her Josie is one of many reasons to attend… atmospheric, emotionally intense and easily the swiftest production of this work I’ve ever seen, a fast-paced, high-stakes affair." - Philadelphia Weekly [Review] "Eugene O'Neill may be America's greatest playwright — and he wrote nothing finer than the mournful, intimate-yet-epic Moon, which features one of the greatest of all female roles, here entrusted to the wonderful Grace Gonglewski." - City Paper "[Hissom and Gonglewski have] played together before in the Arden’s past productions of Major Barbara and Hedda Gabler, but this is their finest collaboration yet." - Broad Street Review [Review] "Powerful theatre … illuminated by such area actors as Eric Hissom as Tyrone and, without question, the remarkable Grace Gonglewski as Josie" - KYW [Review] "Director Matt Pfeiffer and his cast give the show just the right tone of gentle humor... Gonglewski and Hissom are both superb... It's a production that rewards deep concentration, focusing on the hopes and regrets of two people who spend a memorable night out under the moon. And like the moon, this production glows." - Talkin Broadway [Review] "Raw human vulnerability that resonates long after the actors take their bows" - Uwishunu [Review] |
